Life as a sports fan in northern Ohio has been tough over the years. Cleveland has waited longer than any other city with at least three major sports franchises to win a title. What it lacks in facilities, it makes up for with what's outside: a fine, 7,120-yard track that rates among the best bargains in central Ohio. But even with six lakes and more than 75 bunkers as obstacles, a career round is possible.

And while the setting and terrain of the Grizzly isn't as dynamic as Cincinnati's other top public courses, it remains a strong test of golf with some fine holes that are always in excellent shape.

But co-owner Drew Macke gets defensive when golfers pester him about the perceived conditioning problems at the club. He's tripled the size of the tees at No. 4, a par 3 where players once hit off of range mats. During bunker renovations this winter, his staff found some traps didn't have any drainage at all. The result is one of the best public courses in Ohio, layout-wise.
