Canton: The perfect vacation destination for golfers who love football
Canton, Ohio is a sports town, home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It also has wonderful golf courses. While Canton itself is less than 100,000 in population, there are a number of choice public golf venues to play. And if you visit the Hall in the fall, temperatures are ideal for golf.

Winding Hollow in New Albany: Former private golf course opens its doors to the masses
Winding Hollow in New Albany, Ohio is an enjoyable Arthur Hills design that feels mature beyond its years with the atmosphere of a classic club. It can be very tight in spots, especially on the front side, so longer hitters shouldn't plan on hitting their driver 14 times. That said, it's a very leisurely course to play and offers different looks, from tight doglegs through trees to more open, water-heavy holes.

Cleveland rocks! This football town will keep any golfer busy
Despite the blundering of its current Browns, Cleveland will always be looked at as a football town. From the Dawg Pound, where maniacal fans, likely fueled by only beer, sausage and an undying love of the Browns to Bernie Kosar to the great Jim Brown, the NFL has cast a large and imposing shadow over Cleveland. Nonetheless, Cleveland is also a great golf town and ironically golf and the NFL will meet head-on in Ohio in 2007.

Cleveland is synonymous with coming back from the brink. Once the butt of late-night-TV jokes for being a polluted mess, it has become the shining example of the good things that can happen to a city. Cleveland Browns Stadium, Jacobs Field and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have replaced the infamous image of a flaming Lake Erie in the public mind. Cleveland is no slouch golf-wise either: The city and surroundings boast more top golf courses than you'd expect, and most have green fees of $30 or less.

They have a simple philosophy for keeping the green fees low at The Links at Firestone Farms in Columbiana, Ohio -- volume. With the course set between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, it gets players from two major cities and many smaller ones. And while the low green fees have golfers giving The Links a try, the quality of play measures up, as well, with Golf Digest naming it "Ohio's Best New Affordable Public Golf Course."

Norwalk may be best known for the drag-racing that occurs at Norwalk Raceway Park, advertised gaudily on the radio by a maniacal announcer who shouts, "Sunday, Sunday, Sunday - don't miss the thrill of your life at NORWALK RACEWAY PARK!" But the small town a little more than an hour west of Cleveland holds its own in the golf arena as well, namely because of a challenging and well-kept course named Eagle Creek Golf Club.

The service at Fowler's Mill makes you remember how golf was meant to be played. From the bag drop, to the starter, to the servers in the clubhouse, the staff is a well-oiled machine. But stellar customer care is merely a bonus here. Most people come to play a course that was created by the world's most famous golf architect, Pete Dye, and has more than 80 bunkers and enough water to make aquaphobes break out in sweats.

I played Golf at Sugarcreek in Lima, Ohio on the 1st of July and thought, after the bad review left on this site, that they may try to fix some of the problems listed. I found this not to be the case.
... full article »Traditional Irish links golf awaits somewhere between Dublin and Dublin
The Golf Club of Dublin aims to treat golfers to a slice of Ireland. But unlike many cheesy replica facilities that fail by excess, Dublin is effective. You aren't going to think you're in the Old World anytime soon, especially on a sunny, Midwestern day. But you may not think you're in Ohio, either. This Hurdzan-Fry design is a welcome addition to the Columbus area, which is developing into a bit of an unlikely golf destination.

Countless kids have learned to love golf at Indian Valley Golf Course in suburban Cincinnati. Some have blossomed into aces, others keep it as a hobby only. But that's what the game is all about here: giving kids a chance to play and parents the opportunity to watch them grow. For children and adults, the course is inviting - it's also incredibly cheap, offering as much value as anywhere else in the Buckeye state.

Walden Pond was where Henry David Thoreau became one with nature. Okay, so that Walden Pond was in Massachusetts, but the Midwest version of Walden Ponds in Indian Springs, Ohio is certainly on the same page. This course, which has become one of the top tracks in the area, is no pushover. A bad day may have you searching for a nearby cabin in which to hide and contemplate your existence, ala Mr. T.
