Strolling around the Tartan East Golf Club grounds, you can't help but feel the aura of an exclusive private club. That's no coincidence; this was a property intended to be private and is still in its infancy as a public golf course.

They have a simple philosophy for keeping the green fees low at The Links at Firestone Farms in Columbiana, Ohio -- volume. With the course set between Pittsburgh and Cleveland, it gets players from two major cities and many smaller ones. And while the low green fees have golfers giving The Links a try, the quality of play measures up, as well, with Golf Digest naming it "Ohio's Best New Affordable Public Golf Course."

Norwalk may be best known for the drag-racing that occurs at Norwalk Raceway Park, advertised gaudily on the radio by a maniacal announcer who shouts, "Sunday, Sunday, Sunday - don't miss the thrill of your life at NORWALK RACEWAY PARK!" But the small town a little more than an hour west of Cleveland holds its own in the golf arena as well, namely because of a challenging and well-kept course named Eagle Creek Golf Club.

The service at Fowler's Mill makes you remember how golf was meant to be played. From the bag drop, to the starter, to the servers in the clubhouse, the staff is a well-oiled machine. But stellar customer care is merely a bonus here. Most people come to play a course that was created by the world's most famous golf architect, Pete Dye, and has more than 80 bunkers and enough water to make aquaphobes break out in sweats.

The Golf Club of Dublin aims to treat golfers to a slice of Ireland. But unlike many cheesy replica facilities that fail by excess, Dublin is effective. You aren't going to think you're in the Old World anytime soon, especially on a sunny, Midwestern day. But you may not think you're in Ohio, either. This Hurdzan-Fry design is a welcome addition to the Columbus area, which is developing into a bit of an unlikely golf destination.

Countless kids have learned to love golf at Indian Valley Golf Course in suburban Cincinnati. Some have blossomed into aces, others keep it as a hobby only. But that's what the game is all about here: giving kids a chance to play and parents the opportunity to watch them grow. For children and adults, the course is inviting - it's also incredibly cheap, offering as much value as anywhere else in the Buckeye state.

Walden Pond was where Henry David Thoreau became one with nature. Okay, so that Walden Pond was in Massachusetts, but the Midwest version of Walden Ponds in Indian Springs, Ohio is certainly on the same page. This course, which has become one of the top tracks in the area, is no pushover. A bad day may have you searching for a nearby cabin in which to hide and contemplate your existence, ala Mr. T.

The web site for Golf At Sugar Creek in Lima claims it's a public golf course with country club service, but we don't buy it. Golf At Sugar Creek does at times turn on the rural charm with old farmhouses and native grasses swaying in the wind, but the golf experience just isn't worth the long trip that most out-of-town linksters face. With a layout that elicits a loud yawn, this may not even be a best bet for golfers who live here.

It's obvious why Boulder Creek drummed up so much interest when it first opened in 2002. This is not your typical goat track. Owner Joe Salemi, who supposedly never designed a golf course before in his life, let his creativity run wilder than a kid with a Crayola and six bags of Skittles in his gut. "Boulder Creek is a thrill-a-minute rollercoaster ride that's well worth losing a dozen or so balls for," writes Jason Stahl.

Before PGA Tour star Ben Curtis won the British Open in 2003, Windmill Lakes Golf Club was merely a highly regarded golf course in the Cleveland/Akron area. Now, it's become somewhat of a holy site where Ben devotees from all over go to walk the same turf he did as a member of the Kent State Golden Flashes golf team from 1996-2000.
