Destination: Cleveland
Fishing charters can help you pull steelhead or rainbow trout out of Rocky or Cuyahoga rivers or walleye, bass, perch, trout or salmon out of the "big water" of Lake Erie. More urban pursuits should start with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Designed by I.M. Pei, it sprawls over 150,000 square feet and seven stories and includes five theaters. How much is in there? A popular seller is a two-day pass.
Without question, Cleveland is a sports town, with the Indians, Browns and Cavaliers. It's also a former steel town reborn as a biotech and fuel cell center. It's home to the world-renown Cleveland Clinic and the Great Lakes Science Center. Case Western Reserve University has a lofty perch among research institutions, a far cry from its start in territory known as the Western Reserve of Connecticut. Drive through campus and enjoy its zany buildings that turn architecture on its head.
Cleveland is America's true melting pot as seen at the West Side Market and Little Italy. That diversity extends to its eateries, from Melt Bar and Grill, known for enormous and creative grilled cheese sandwiches, to Das Schnitzel Haus, Sokolowski's University Inn or Frank Sterle's Slovenian Country House (complete with polka nights). White Oaks offers classic fare: steak and chops, chased by creme brulee.
The area doesn't disappoint in the golf area, either. This is a city that prides itself in classic golf, from Riceland Golf Course which opened in 1922, to Manakiki Golf Club, a 1920s Donald Ross design where an industrialist's mansion serves as the clubhouse. It's a diverse course with two holes playing over a canyon. Sleepy Hollow is another Cleveland classic, laid atop and in ravines by designer Stanley Thompson in 1925. More than 60 bunkers and trees make the course a formidable foe from start to finish. For a modern flourish, try Little Mountain Country Club with its views of Lake Erie. Designed by Hurdzan-Fry, it makes the most of the rolling hills and woods the course meanders through. It tosses out challenges in the form of 80 bunkers, a large lake, waterfalls and Ellison Creek.

Cleveland's sports teams might struggle, but its public golf puts the 'Oh!' in Ohio
Life as a sports fan in northern Ohio has been tough over the years. Cleveland has waited longer than any other city with at least three major sports franchises to win a title. The lone bright spot in the region's sports scene has to be golf. The greater Cleveland area offers some of the state's finest public courses, especially within its value-laden Metropark system.

Despite the blundering of its current Browns, Cleveland will always be looked at as a football town. From the Dawg Pound, where maniacal fans, likely fueled by only beer, sausage and an undying love of the Browns to Bernie Kosar to the great Jim Brown, the NFL has cast a large and imposing shadow over Cleveland. Nonetheless, Cleveland is also a great golf town and ironically golf and the NFL will meet head-on in Ohio in 2007.

Cleveland is synonymous with coming back from the brink. Once the butt of late-night-TV jokes for being a polluted mess, it has become the shining example of the good things that can happen to a city. Cleveland Browns Stadium, Jacobs Field and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame have replaced the infamous image of a flaming Lake Erie in the public mind. Cleveland is no slouch golf-wise either: The city and surroundings boast more top golf courses than you'd expect, and most have green fees of $30 or less.

The service at Fowler's Mill makes you remember how golf was meant to be played. From the bag drop, to the starter, to the servers in the clubhouse, the staff is a well-oiled machine. But stellar customer care is merely a bonus here. Most people come to play a course that was created by the world's most famous golf architect, Pete Dye, and has more than 80 bunkers and enough water to make aquaphobes break out in sweats.

It's obvious why Boulder Creek drummed up so much interest when it first opened in 2002. This is not your typical goat track. Owner Joe Salemi, who supposedly never designed a golf course before in his life, let his creativity run wilder than a kid with a Crayola and six bags of Skittles in his gut. "Boulder Creek is a thrill-a-minute rollercoaster ride that's well worth losing a dozen or so balls for," writes Jason Stahl.

Lifelong Cleveland residents Lee and Loretta Chaplin have set their sites on Hilton Head Island every winter since the 1970s. They once owned a vacation property on the 16th hole of Harbour Town Golf Links, but now they own a home in Moss Creek Plantation just off the island. Even though the location of their getaway abode has changed, their love of the island remains the same.

It's getting to be that time of year. The gutters are overflowing with leaves, and your better half is bugging you to get off the couch and clean 'em out before she cleans your clock. Wait! Better watch out...the bogey-man might get ya! Maybe if you're lucky, he'll put you six feet deep before you can play the golf courses mentioned below. Some of them might not be as scary as the Mummy, but all have one serious flaw or another that's likely to scare the bejeezus out of even the most brave soul. It's best to stay away from them, especially around Halloween.

Par 5s. The pros hate it when they don't birdie them because they know they've lost a stroke to the rest of the field. Most average golfers dread them because of their size. Some play them optimistically, telling themselves they have one extra shot to waste if they so choose.
