Destination: Cincinnati
Within 20 minutes, you can visit Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, or walk from Ohio to Kentucky via the Purple People Bridge, a former train crossing that arches over the Ohio River with riverboats plying the waters below.
Cincinnati, with nine bridges spiraling from the city, kept the river the focal point when it built Sawyer Point. The linear park runs along the water and is adorned with a pavilion, tennis courts, a skating rink, volleyball courts and a playground, as well as open space for touch football or Frisbee.
More unusual Cincy haunts include the Creation Museum for the Bible's literal take on life and a 30-foot paddlewheel at the riverfront to remind visitors of the city's past.
Don't leave Cincinnati without going to Skyline for chili. It involves spaghetti, onions, cheese and beans. Just take our word for it. Afterward, have Graeter's ice cream. For more formal fare, dine at Orchids at the Palm Court or Boca in Oakley.
When it comes to golf, Cincinnati didn't skimp on that, either. Check out the Tom Fazio-designed Belterra Golf Club or the classic Deer Run Country Club that rises and drops over Western Cincinnati's hills. The Golf Center at King's Island has hosted professional tournaments and has three courses, one of them an executive course perfect for honing your game. For a resort course, play Harbor Links Golf Club at Sagamore Resort in nearby Liberty, Indiana. Designed by P.B. Dye, it rolls over 7,000 yards. You have to work hard not to find things to do in Ohio's southern-most city. The rolling terrain and the river team up to create a compact, vibrant city that will surprise you.

Walden Pond was where Henry David Thoreau became one with nature. The Vineyard Golf Course in an eastern suburb of Cincinnati probably has a grapevine or two on it somewhere. That's what golfer Robert Ohler heard anyhow, so he spends a part of each regular round looking for it. Maybe off the fourth tee or back near the green on No. 15. It's somewhere, he figures. It's got to be there.

Once considered the kid sister of nearby Shaker Run, Walden Ponds Golf Club can stand on its own, as it has finally blossomed into a top course in Southwest Ohio. The layout has few blind holes and many distinctive touches, most having something to do with trouble and usually the trouble stems from the quiet water of a little pond. Was Henry David Thoreau a golfer? If so, he might have liked Walden Ponds G.C. and the sense of nature evident on some holes.

It's hard to categorize Cincinnati as an overlooked city. But these days, the Queen city's lack-o-growth has led to some real golf bargains.
