A Hidden Gem
The course is in great shape. The greens are as near to perfect as can be! For a great experience, friendly staff, and super rates, come and see!
The course offers challenges to every skill level. Don't complain if you can't keep it in the fairway because it's too tough from the tips. Try an easier set of tees.
There's good reason why a US Open qualifier was held here some time ago.
Father's Day golfing
Was a great time. The course was great and very challenging. We will back I'm sure
good and bad
The course was great. It was busy so we had people ahead of us. No biggie to us though. We were playing our turn when the group behind us not once but multiple times hit there balls within inches of me. I was then yelled at by one of the guys who felt it was necessary to use profane language. I spoke to the lady at the clubhouse who refused to do anything. Overall it was good but definately felt customer service lacked.
Good practice course
The course was in decent condition. The rough and fairways were good but the tee boxes could use some grooming and fertilization. The clubhouse staff was very friendly and the prices were better than reasonable! One thing I found annoying was attempting to concentrate on my shot while dealing with moweres nearby and in the fairways during my tee shots. On one hole I actually thought I was going to hit an attendant on my tee shot. All in all the price made it a great opportunity to get in a practice round.
the course is a great lay out but needs works on greens and rough
was a beautiful day, would not play this course for the price they are charging.
Getting better everyday!
Wow! What a difference a month has made since my last review. I play here maybe 2-3 times a week and it's great to see the course shaping up nicely. They are really busting their humps to make it nice. The greens are starting to grow back beautifully, although still on the slow side, but rolling so much better now. The bunkers are getting much needed attention now. It really is looking great all around. Hole #12 is still my sworn enemy, but I do recommend this course.
Great Course that has not been taken care of
This course has great potential
Challanging
Scenic
What is dragging this course down is the maintenance.
Sand Bunkers that have no sand, but plenty of dirt and weeds
Greens with "pot holes" - some so damaged that were basically unplayable.
Staff - Arrived and was told to wait to be checked in while he took care of the customers getting hotdogs / drinks / etc.
When we made turn was given the impression that it was an inconvience to serve us.
It is a real shame that this course is in this condition both with course maintenance and staff friendlyness.
PS.
No Beer sales on Sunday
Great test of golf
Had a tough winter here in Cleveland. Greens are returning to their former healthy status. Course plays well for a solid straight shooting golfer. Always a challenge though, and a must return course. I usually play WWoods 3 to 5 times a season.
Nice track
I don't know why more people don't play Wicked Woods. Its a little hard to find, but not that hard. It's not fancy. No GPS on the carts. But it is a really interesting layout... no boring holes and only a couple of quirky ones. Most of the holes are tight.... wooded (as the name implies)... but fair.
What a Difference!
What a difference since my last review. The greens are greatly improved and everything is in bloom and beautiful. The course is in nice shape now that Chuck and the crew have had some decent weather. Almost a country club ambiance. Come on out for a great experience.
It's Early Days
I have been reading the reviews and for the most part, to be honest, I agree. The weather has been extremely difficult so far and Chuck and the crew have been working every available minute to get the course in the shape everyone is accustomed to. The greens in particular have been giving most guys fits but I am told the soil and roots are healthy and conditions continue to improve as quickly as Mother Nature allows. For the most part the fairways are very nice although there is some softness in the low spots. Print out this review for a draft on me.
Challenging
Away from the city, quiet, scenic, etc. While the weather held, it was a great day. Course is very hilly and wooded (hence the name) so it is challenging but enjoyable. Greens are not recovered from the hard winter yet so putting was spastic.
DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE
Do not play this course. It is in terrible shape. Tees and Greens are very poor. MAJOR snow mold dead spots on greens. Sand traps have weeds growing in them. You can not putt these greens unless you are a downhill skier and like to mogul ski. When I asked what happened to the course to the attendant she got snarky and said the same thing that happened to surrounding courses. I have played surrounding courses and they are not in this bad of shape. I've played this course 2-3 times a year in the past. I will not be playing it anytime soon
Can't wait to see the finished product!!
I'm going to be a bit biased in my review. I have played this course on a regular basis for 15 years. It is hands down my favorite course anywhere in the world. But hole #12 is the reason why I drink. The course is a little rough looking right now. Tree removal and the greens under repair are underway. So it is a little beat up right now. But Chuck and his crew were out there working hard to make it nice again. And also, it'll make it fair for all golfers and cut down on the 5+ hour weekend rounds. I love the elevation changes and all of the views of Geauga County it offers. It's so beautiful out there, I almost forget about the bowling score I posted. The staff out there has always been very accomadating for my friends and myself. Mike, who checked us in, was very nice and explained what was going on as far as the repairs so there were no surprises. They also have a really good hot dog and the bar area looks great. The course is rough right now, but I would definitely recommend playing there.
Nice layout, but....
Nice golf course, friendly staff.... greens were virtually unputtable. Rough winter took it's toll. Hopefully, they will be able to bring them back!
Greens need work.
Greens are very rough, sand filled spots everywhere. Probably due to the rough winter.
Nice course. Avoid until Greens have been repaired
Wicked Woods is a nice tricky little track out past Chardon. The greens are DISEASED. Covered in holes. Makes competitive rounds impossible. Thankfully my friends and I were just having a fun round so it wasn't terrible (we shot 76 and 84) so we are not awful golfers. The starter told us the greens were horrible and that we could cancel if we wanted to after 1 hole. So he was up front. I like the course have played many times. Just wait until the greens are fixed. Definitely call ahead and ask about the conditions of the greens BEFORE you book.
Challenge of hills & valleys.
Hills and valleys. This course you have to be sure and plan playing shots. Ponds , sand, fairway, left & right turns. However the course is bad shape. Greens a mess but we have a horrible winter. Fun course if you don't mind walking hills.
Potential to be Amazing, just not this early in the season...
I gave this course a good rating, because I think it has the potential to be great....tons of trees, elevation changes, and a nice layout with some really unique holes. Few criss-crossing holes which makes for a peaceful, secluded round. However, I would hold off making the trek out here until later in the season...
The fairways, tee boxes, and rough were in good shape for the most part, other than the ridiculous amount of leaves making it very hard to find balls in the rough. However, the last review hits the nail on the head as far as the greens are concerned. They are in TERRIBLE shape (as of 4/27) with huge sand craters all over them. (not due to aeration) To make a putt beyond 10 feet, you essentially have to be Houdini. Hopefully this gets fixed soon....
Overall, I would definitely give this course another chance. I imagine it would be fantastic during peak season when all the trees are green and the course has received some tender loving care. You better be able to hit your driver straight or keep it in the bag....lots of target golf....and if you walk be prepared for some hills and scenic jaunts in between holes.
On a final note the lady in the pro shop was not the nicest person in the world...she acted like I did her a great disservice by showing up to play 9 holes at 5 pm. Don't let this discourage you from coming though, people are crazy....especially in Geauga county.
