Spongy greens, bunkers without sand, tee boxes uneven.
I have played here many times (used to be in league) and don't remember the course being in this shape. Thought I saw a commercial saying they 'spent millions of $$ on improvements'. There is no way. This course is turning into a rundown muni track unless the maintenance improves. Still has great views of downtown though. No hurry to come back.
Bunkers need some work.
Good round of golf with friends. Playing pace is slow, waited almost every hole. Nice course lay out, trouble with the deep rough. Bunkers need some work.
Paid $25 and wasn't worth it
This course has such potential, but is in poor shape. Our cart nearly died. People were driving carts all over - even up to the greens. The greens had way to many ball marks, etc.
great course
Fun course. Easy to find. Great shape. Very friendly staff
Excellent views of the Downtown Columbus Skyline
I had played this course once before years ago when it first was opened. I will play again much sooner next time. This is one of the truest links courses in the Columbus area and with the winds up on the day we played it was very challenging indeed. I also loved the final two holes which are a bit more traditional but every bit as challenging as they bring the water and trees back into play. I would recommend this for a change of pace to traditional area courses.
Narrow fairways and bunkers make it a challenge!
The course is well maintained. The greens could be a bit smoother but are well manicured. The narrow, undulating fairways with bunkers and tall grass make it a challenge to keep the ball on target. Very few trees until the last two holes but that may be a blessing for some! Overall, a course to enjoy a nice round of golf.
good greens and fairways, bunkers and rough need work
greens and fairways very good rough to high, spent considerable time looking for balls just off faiways. bunkers not good. overall enjoy course layout and will play again
You probably won't go back.. Unless you enjoy highway noise, very long rough, and factory noise.
I feel as though there are many more things wrong with this course than there are right.
Pros:
1.Very nice bent grass fairways and teeboxes
2.Great greens. A bit on the slow side but they had obviously been rolled recently. Aerification marks have healed completely and the ball will hold
3.Hot cart girls
4. Decent value for the course. If you can ever step onto a bent grass facility for less than 30 dollars in a cart you have done something right
Cons.....
1. Mostly dismissive grounds crew. I appreciate the fact that they have work to do (grounds crew member on another course myself). However, they were disrespectful when mowing and watering. They would come up close to my group and me when we were hitting and just keep cruising.
2. The rough on this golf course is unreasonable. I have played here twice and if you are to miss the fairway by just 10 yards you are engulffed in rough that is too high to find a golf ball in. This is a secondary cut separate from the knee high (and equally thick) heather-rough that is characteristic to links courses.
Ok. So these cons are not necessarily part of the every day experience at Pheonix Golf Links and they were probably just something that I picked up on during my experience.
However.....
This is the big one and why I will never go back.
The entire front 9 on this course is bordered by I-71. The highway noise is constant. The entire back 9 is bordered by a factory. The bangs and crashes are plentiful and I only recommend playing here if you enjoy the constant sound of back-up alarms in dump trucks.
The other con. This course sits ontop of the site of a city-wide dump from the 70's. There is no way to know what is sitting just below the surface.
Spend your 24 dollars somewhere else ohioans.
Beautiful
It definitely is St Andrews in ohio. Fairways and greens are awesome but it's super windy here. Have to be on your A game.
Ground Under Repair
Typical links course, be accurate off the tee or you won't find your ball. 18th hole is like a breath of fresh air, but it makes you want a 2nd 18 hole course waiting for you just like it.
Huge problem was the amount of ground under repair. There happened to be a grounds crew working on laying down huge amounts of sod that day (not sure of the reason why all that grass had died), but said crew needs to learn golf etiquette -- either that, or they don't care about getting blasted in the head with a tee shot.
Also, no starter was anywhere to be found, so for some reason a single was let out onto the course in front of us, who played behind a threesome including a walker.
I like the balance of risk/reward on this course. Rewards good shots with scoring opportunities and penalizes bad shots.
First time playing the course. The long grass and heather is not too bad. It definitely helps to know where it is because a shot in the deep stuff is probably a lost ball.
I would recommend a hole by hole diagram of where the heavy stuff is because one really needs to avoid it like it is "out-of-bounds". A lost ball has the same penalty as OB.
course was in great shape
we had a great time, would recommend this course to anyone any time
Good Value, Fun course
Diverse course which allowed you to have some fun. Open links style course so i lost a few balls in the thick stuff. Only complaint is minimal yardage markers in fairways, teeboxes.
The 3rd time I've played Phoenix and have gone from disliking it to liking it quite a bit.
I like to walk, and this place is walkable. I've done it twice. It's a long, uphill grind to the first tee and the last hole heads away from the clubhouse. You will finish more than 500 yards from the parking lot. If you aware of that and aren't afraid of some exercise, it is fine for walking.
Otherwise:
It is a links couse on the shores of I-71. Interesting holes and views of Columbus. Nice clubhouse and nice staff. It is well kept. Try to steer clear of the high grass past the rough. It is built on an old dump. It has a clay cap and therefore no trees, except for the last hole.
This course is wide open
This course is wide open, very few trees to contend with. This course plays fairly easy but stiil has a few challenging holes.
Winter golf in Ohio
It is winter in Ohio so course is in good shape. However some of the tee boxes need a lot of attention. Fairways & greens in good shape for the season.
Ok for the money
This course is well maintained but always slow. Not sure why they have so many rangers because they do not police the course.
Good round for the money.
First off, let me say that I am new to the area and have not had a chance to play all the courses so I will focus more on this course and not compare it to others. My first impression of Pheonix was good, I knew it was a muni track so my expectations of the facilities were not that high. I do however expect that what facilities a course does have be taken care of, and Pheonix was. Clean, well organized, carts ready to go. The range is a different story, grass tee was destroyed but didn't look as if there was room to move tee's around for better turf. We all prefer grass tee's, and when you are at the range you can see where the tee placement was the previous day, along with seed and repair work. It did not look as if they were working the range to keep it in good shape, maybe due to the time of year. The course is in "ok" shape. Lots of bare spots in the fairways but you can identify them easily, rough is short and doesn't penalize you too much but honestly the fairways are big enough that it really shouldn't be an issue. Greens were in decent shape, bunkers were hard and did not look as though they had been raked in a few days. They do have their drainage figured out, maybe they should consult for some of the other courses in the area or better yet, lets turn all landfills into golf courses. I'm from the Northwest and have been spoiled with links golf, Chambers Bay, Bandon, etc.. but I do understand that geography here is limited and I do think Pheonix has done a good job with what they have to work with. Now just tighten up the small maintenance issues and I will have no complaints. Finally, my round cost $20. For $20, I would play Pheonix anyday,
The course was very playable and moved well
Not the best location ,but the course was in good shape and was affordable.
