Short course with character
Minerva lake is a short course that probably should not have any par fives. But, it is a mature course with character making it an enjoyable round.
Minerva Lake
Went in a two some on a sunday afternoon. Started pouring as we were on the first tee. I'm surprised the course let us go out being there isn't much cart path and how wet the conditions were but after the first hole the weather cleared up.
We played from the back tees and even from there the course is very short with almost every hole being a 3 wood and short iron onto the green. Also, there was almost zero water hazards and no bunkers (which was nice). They countered this with narrow fairways and small greens that often slope front to back which makes landing them trickier.
The course had some beautiful par 3's and #18 was a pure treat to play.
They didn't have a ranger or starter so we eventually got stuck behind a foursome who had never played golf before and had to wait 3 holes before we got to play through. Other than that it was a great day of golf. We got through 18 in a little over 3 hours and for the price, it was hard to complain.
Old School
This course is tucked away in an average Ohio neighborhood, but has some creative design work done to it. The 9th and 10th have a challenging blind spot from the tee, and are the two layup holes. The creek running through the course creates wholes like these two with interesting elevation changes, and will leave you in an interesting situations if the ball is played short or long on many wholes. The course map can be confusing with having the first next to the 11th, but can be figured out by finding the signs pointing you in the right direction.
The staff is helpful and mature, and with age comes great wisdom of the course and way of playing the sport. If you are looking for a nostalgic pro shop that has decent deals, well stocked, and will remind you of going into the pro shop back in the day this is the place.
The downsides to this course is the removal of the bunkers, and some holes seem to be designed after the fact of the other holes. The 18th par 3 seems to barely fit on the course as ball are landing on you from the 17th green, and you are shooting at the clubhouse. Some of the other holes may give you this vibe of being designed around the other holes. The only other flaw is that the signs showing yardage and map of the hole need to be updated and big enough so you don't have to go out of your way to find it and read it.
First round
This course was decent, but I only golf a few times a year. Course was very tight for me, crossing over itself a few times. If you have a nasty slice ( like me), you will play a lot of 2 fairway golf.
Reasonably priced for a metro club
I enjoyed the challenges of this course and will return to enjoy those challenges.
Nothing fancy just friendly golf.
Short and fun, slower greens, no sand. Always a good view to be had. The staff is always friendly as well as the majority of the golfers. EXCELLENT value!
Fun local course
We play here often. It's close and in decent condition for spring. Greens were very slow. Love the starter who chatted and apologized for slow getting off tee. (10-15min behind our time). Paired with ok guys. No alcohol so that would be something to put on their info. Sometimes we need some "swing oil" at the turn. Will be back soon!
I'm not sure why they don't post/advertise this anywhere, but you can actually bring your own beer to the course. They'll even keep some of it in their fridge for you to keep it cold until the turn. I played this course for 3 years and just found all this out about a month ago. Hope that info helps :-)
Great Value and Unique Challene
I have played this course a few times and it's very consistent. The fairways are in excellent shape and there are a number of unique holes on this relatively short course. Also consistent is the slow and bouncy greens. You have to hammer your putts folks or you'll be continually shaking your head in frustration for leaving them short. Another nice feature is there are very few holes where you'll lose your ball. I wouldn't say super skilled players would enjoy the course but most of us aren't in that category.
Old course gem
Great old course, narrow fairways, small greens with a premium on the 180-220 STRAIGHT shot off the tee.
Course was in great shape despite the rain and chill of a mid-April afternoon.
Recommend to anyone who likes mature trees, challenging, yet reasonable holes, and a quiet round of golf.
Good course for the money
First time playing Minerva Lake. I was hesitant at first because of all the mixed reviews I've read and heard about. Yes, it's early in the season, but the course for the most part was in good shape. Greens were below average but should get better. No one playing in front or behind us made for a relaxing round. I'd recommend to all
This is a shorter but enjoyable course
Greens are fairly small and course is fairly short but is well kept and included deer as curious spectators
Old golf course, but still fun to play.
Every time I play here I think is will be my last. There is a rumor that the golf course land will be used for new home developement. I have always enjoyed playing here because it is a wide open golf course and not over crowded.
Terrible course
Extremely slow pace of play.. No sense of golf etiquette by any of the players or staff. When I requested to have an employee speak to slower players in front of me, they said "too bad it's the nature of the beast". I replied that at any other course 25 minute hole times would be unacceptable. Very poor green conditions. Very poor fairway conditions. Overall very displeased with a waste of time at this course. Anyone who can actually golf should stay away..
no longer closing, wanted to check this out!
Course is intruiging. You play 10 holes, then switch at turn for back 8. Two lay-up holes which the manager was kind to share the distances with us. Quite a few elevation changes for a columbus course. Be aware, there are quite a few greens that are elevated, so if your in between clubs choose the one that'll get ya up and stay on green. I often was short and the hills stole the ball backward.
The only real major problem i had was we were approaching the 10th green and the sprinklers were on. It was frustrating since approach shots were difficult and the whole putting scheme was different. Slowed us down abou ten minutes to wait for them to turn off, then they sprayed our cart when they were turned off... so park further than you think away.
Lots of wildlife. Three holes had deer just roaming around. They seemed pretty domesticated. I would have liked a bit more in the way of practice fascilities, but there isn't much room for expansion.
Home course
I have played this course a few hundred times because I have lived in the area for awhile...it's your run of the mill public course..but I enjoy it..friendly layout..2 really challeging holes (8,9, maybe 10 too) and 15-16 holes that are scorer friendly holes..if your a single digit handicap who has played golf courses around the world you will probably find plenty to complain about..but for cheap it's a nice friendly course with a fun layout..
this course has great features
'the course was very nicel the pace of play was great and the overall conditions were also very good
Nice rolling terrain.
The course is in great shape. The owners & staff are to be commended for the upkeep considering that it was scheduled to close this fall. I'm very happy that it isn't closing. Keep up the good work.
A Local Favorite
I play at Minerva Lake 2-3 times per year and enjoy the course. If you've never played Minerva, they have a nice collection of Par 3's that feature challenging valleys in between the tee box and greens. For being located in Columbus, the course also has nice hills and slopes. There are also some trees that add to the challenge of the course.
There are no bunkers on the course, and it seems like they may have been filled in some years ago.
Minerva is also unique in that it has 10 holes out and then 8 on the back.
Pace of play was excellent and we had no wait at any point.
I really enjoy this course and would recommend it to anyone. I hope that they are able to keep the course open in its current configuration for many years to come.
Tremendous Value
Not the most difficult course, but still has some challenging holes and requires a bit of strategy (i.e. lay-up or go for it). Fair share of holes that you can score on, so the round is always brings out some high fives. Always in good condition. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Have their fair share of regulars who give it a good vibe. The value you get for a round here is incredible! The 11:50 "Hot Deal" via golf now is $14 for 18 and cart... Amazing. Great location for those living in the campus area. Highly recommended.
Course is obnoxious in all aspects
Nothing was enjoyable about this place avoid at all costs would not play here again for free
Saw your rating of 1 star for food beverage. I don't know your experience, but if it is because they don't sell beer, just would like you to know that you are allowed to bring your own beer to this course. They'll even keep some in their fridge for you to keep it cold until you make the turn. If beer doesn't mean anything to you, then disregard this comment. I personally food/snack wise have never had any issues, and can honestly say I've had worse food at courses that cost twice as much.
